Menstrual health products are a necessity for every woman and girl around the world. Yet, the choice of product can carry deep implications not only for personal health and financial stability but also for the environment. Washable menstrual pads, also known as reusable or cloth pads, have increasingly gained attention as a sustainable, practical, and empowering solution—especially in communities where affordability and access to disposable sanitary products remain limited.

Washable pads are made from natural and synthetic fabrics such as cotton, bamboo, and microfiber. Unlike disposable pads, which are discarded after a single use, washable pads are designed for repeated use over an extended period. On average, a well-made reusable pad can last between two to five years with proper care (UNFPA, 2022). This significantly reduces the recurring monthly cost associated with purchasing disposable products. According to estimates by the Women’s Environmental Network (2020), the average menstruating person uses more than 11,000 disposable menstrual products in their lifetime, amounting to a financial cost of thousands of dollars. In contrast, a small set of washable pads can cover the same time span at a fraction of the cost.

Beyond financial savings, the environmental impact of washable pads is profound. Disposable pads often contain plastics, superabsorbent polymers, and synthetic fragrances, all of which contribute to long-lasting waste. It is estimated that a single sanitary pad can take 500 to 800 years to decompose due to its plastic content (UNEP, 2021).

Importantly, washable pads also promote better menstrual health. Many users report that reusable cloth pads are more breathable and gentler on the skin compared to commercial disposables, which can cause irritation or rashes due to the presence of chemicals and synthetic layers. A study published by WaterAid (2020) highlights that increased comfort and reduced skin problems are among the leading reasons women prefer reusable products once they make the switch.

At Royalty World, we recognize the multi-dimensional value of washable menstrual pads—not only for individual users but for entire communities. This is why we have championed the distribution of 13,539 Papilio washable menstrual pads to underserved communities, particularly to girls and women with limited access to menstrual hygiene products. The Papilio Washable Pad is a carefully designed, high-quality solution made of three fabric layers: a soft top layer made from local cotton, a highly absorbent microfiber inner core, and a breathable, waterproof backing to prevent leaks. This thoughtful construction ensures both effectiveness and comfort.

Moreover, the production of Papilio pads contributes to social empowerment. These pads are manufactured locally in Cameroon by vulnerable single mothers and internally displaced women under the social enterprise Rinoo Cameroon. This approach not only meets the menstrual needs of thousands of women and girls but also creates livelihood opportunities for those on the economic margins. It is a compelling example of how menstrual health initiatives can intersect with economic development, environmental care, and community resilience.

Washable menstrual pads represent more than just a hygienic alternative—they are a symbol of sustainability, dignity, and empowerment. Their ability to significantly reduce waste, save costs, and improve comfort makes them a practical solution for individuals and a responsible choice for communities.
